The members of the mathematics club discuss the scientific heritage of world-famous scientists

On September 30, the first meeting of the mathematics club devoted to the significant role of the "queen of sciences" in the information society took place at the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic". Lecturers, schoolchildren and foreign students worked on a joint project "Mathematics is the universal language of the planet" and discussed the scientific heritage of world-famous mathematicians.

More than 60 first-year students of economic specialties as well as foreign students of Poltava Polytechnic took part in the meeting of the mathematics club led by Nataliia Ichanska, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic". Pupils of the Municipal Institution "Poltava secondary school of I-III degrees №26", led by their mentor, foreign language teacher Olena Mykhailova, willingly joined the lively scientific discussion and constructive dialogue about the importance of mathematics in the life of modern person.

Head of the club, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor, head of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Nataliia Ichanska, greeted the participants of the scientific meeting and told about the main directions of scientific and educational activities of the student scientific society.

Last year, a kind of "highlight" of the activities of scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics was the successful implementation of the project "Mathematics is the universal language of the planet". The plans are to continue a series of meetings devoted to geniuses and some interesting facts on the history of mathematical sciences.

"Every time we refute the general notions that mathematics is a dry and inaccessible science, and that people who have made epochal discoveries in the history of science should be considered an exception rather than a common rule. Our students are able to make sure that exploring mathematical laws, writing multi-line formulas, and solving equations is a useful and exciting thing. Quoting the statement of a well-known scientist and inventor, "Mathematics is useful because it puts the mind in order", I want to note the importance of our joint efforts to popularize this exact science.

The speeches of our foreign students prove once again that modern youth chooses with its heart exact and applied specialties in Ukrainian universities, and our scientific meetings motivate schoolchildren to make conscientious professional choices in the future," –commented the head of the student mathematics club, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor, head of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Nataliia Ichanska.

A separate thematic block of the meeting were bright English-language presentations and speeches of university students from India and Nigeria, prepared under the guidance of the Candidate of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics of Poltava Polytechnic Serhii Hudz.

Desai Nekhal Ankurbkhai, a student of the 303-MEin group of the Educational and Research Institute of Information Technologies and Robotics, presented an informative report on the topic "Main mathematical achievements of the Indian scientist Srinivasa Ramanujan".

The speaker devoted his own speech to reviewing the achievements of the world-famous genius scientist, whose role for modern science is difficult to overestimate. Listeners were impressed by the versatility of the outstanding personality talent of one of the best mathematicians of the twentieth century, whose vast scientific heritage is impossible not to admire.

"Having lived a bright but short life, Srinivasa Ramanujan, independently of other scientists, obtained about 3,900 mathematical results, a small number of which turned out to be erroneous or already known, but the correctness of most of them was confirmed. His results were original and very unusual, they opened space for further researches, inspired many scientists in various fields and found application in astronomy, quantum physics and the theory of the universe structure," – shared the information a third-year student of the Scientific and Research Institute of Information Technologies and Robotics, Desai Nekhal Ankurbkhai.

The touching life story, the discoveries of the genius scientist during the First World War, the importance of true friendship despite the differences of cultural and religious views, as well as the personal drama of strong feelings for his wife and unshakable faith in the triumph of justice, love, truth and intelligence were reflected in 2015 British biographical  drama called "The Man Who Knew Infinity". The excellent footage of this film masterpiece was also used in the presentation.

The topical report "The concept of physical quantity of time: mathematical aspects" was presented by a student of group 202-MEin of the Educational and Research Institute of Information Technologies and Robotics of Poltava Polytechnic, Festus Frederik Sashekvoiami.

According to the speaker, time is one of the physics and philosophy basic concepts, one of the space-time coordinates, along which the world lines of physical (material) bodies are stretched. Apparently, "time" as a philosophical category is obviously an integral attribute of the world. It began with the birth of the world and will disappear when the world comes to an end.

"Unfortunately, despite the radical change in the role of time in the theory of relativity, there is still no answer to the question "What is the nature of time?" There is also no answer to the question "Why is time seemingly incessant rather than discrete? Why do we live in a world with one-dimensional time?" In modern mathematical physics, the first attempts to answer these questions are already being made.

The fundamental property of time is its unidirectionality, the flow from the past to the future. The consequence of the uniformity of time is the law of energy conservation. There is also a cosmological direction of time, where the beginning of time is the Big Bang, and the passage of time depends on the expansion of the universe," – said Festus Frederik Sashekvoiami.

The participants warmly responded to the speeches of the mathematical club members and thanked the organizers of the meeting for a unique opportunity to join the effective scientific and professional communication and take an active part in educational, popular and scientific events of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic". At the end of the event, the participants took a memorable photo and agreed on further scientific and educational cooperation.

Lecturers of the Department of Higher and Applied Mathematics of the University invite talented student and pupil youth of Poltava region to join scientific and practical conferences, round tables and meetings with scientists, representatives of various branches of society.

Earlier, members of the mathematical scientific club discussed the application of mathematics in everyday life, held a discussion on beauty in exact science, discussed web add-ons, R programming language and environmental applications for smartphones as well as deliberated on the scientific heritage of the famous Poltava resident.
