“Even in the conditions of russia’s full-scale armed aggression against independent Ukraine, an important event took place in the sports life of the Poltava region, which the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” had the honor to host at its sports base.

I hope that our sports complex became a comfortable place for intense intellectual struggle, and the hospitality of our team was inspiring – this is the least we could do as a sign of gratitude for the heroic work of the rescuers.

And I would also like to thank the head of the Main Office of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Poltava region Volodymyr Salohub for the many years of cooperation, for teaching how to act in emergency situations and for helping to establish the security infrastructure of the university, where all participants in the educational process feel protected.

I sincerely congratulate all the participants and wish for peace and exclusively sports matches for life. At Poltava Polytechnic, you are always welcome and we are ready to implement new joint initiatives!” – noted the Rector of the university, Volodymyr Onyshchenko.

The Championships began with standing upright and looking at the national flag of Ukraine and a minute’s silence in honor of compatriots who died as a result of the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine.

As noted by the chief judge of the Championships, the president of the Poltava Regional Chess Federation, Hryhorii Shcherbov, the tournament was held in 7 rounds according to the Swiss system, i.e., in each subsequent round, participants with the same or similar number of points earned in previous games met, and for each victory, the chess player received 1 point, and for a draw – 0.5 points.

According to the results of the competition, the winners of the Championships were:

  • I place – Viacheslav Pavlenko (18th state fire and rescue unit, Lubny);
  • II place – Viktor Yemets (emergency and rescue squad of special purpose, Poltava);
  • III place – Ihor Yakovenko (Head Office of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Poltava region).

In the overall team competition, the winner was the chess team of the emergency and rescue squad of special purpose, the second place was taken by the team of the 3rd state fire and rescue squad, and the third place was taken by the team of the Main Directorate.

Recently, rescue workers taught students how to act in emergency situations.
