Philologists Study a Phenomenon of English Literature – the Works of Famous Bronte Sisters

The participants of the Scientific Club “Philology” headed by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Anna Pavelieva discussed the masterpieces of Bronte sisters, the most famous classical writer family of English literature, whose books are listed in the Top-100 best novels of English literature.

“Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë were expected to be dutiful, self-sacrificing Victorian girls. While their writing is salacious at times, tackling themes such as a woman’s worth, addiction, family dysfunction and sexuality, the real shock value for Victorian audiences was that the subject matter was culled from the Brontës’ own lives. These three women who lived such cramped lives, and who died so young (Emily at 30, Anne at 29, and Charlotte at 38), wrote anarchic books about passion, about injustice, about how to live. So we dedicated one of our meetings to their personalities,” Anna Pavelieva commented.

The discussion covered the following topics:

1. The Bronte Sisters as a unique phenomenon in the English literature (by Victoria Shefer, Oleksandr Plut, Ania Reva).

2. Charlotte Bronte and her literary activity (by Anastasiia Panova, Alona Bezrodna, Ilona and Kristina Yeshchenko).

3. Jane Eyre as a combination of realistic and romantic tendencies. The influence of Gothic literature on the book (by Anna Ovsii, Svitlana Kis, Anna Matsko, Veronika Korenchenko, Victoria Popova).

4. Social and gender problems of the novel (by Victoria Popova, Karyna Zdorenko, Valeriia Filonova, Vladislava Tiutiunnyk).

5. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte as a modernistic novel (Anastasiia Chubukova, Sofia Dmityuk).

According to the members of the scientific club, they could enjoy the masterpieces of the English literature in English, which contributed to their language proficiency level, helped them analyze the works better and understand the author’s thoughts.
