On October 25, teachers and students of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" joined the implementation of the Presidential program "Green Country". University ecologists planted 3,000 Scots pine seedlings in Malopereshchepynske Forestry of the State Enterprise "Poltava Forestry" (Mala Pereshchepyna village, Poltava region).
The teachers of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas joined the initiative: the head of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management, Doctor of Technical Sciences Olena Stepova; Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Nataliia Smoliar; Candidate of Biological Sciences, Associate Professor Olena Hanoshenko. The event was also attended by the 1st year students majoring in "Renewable heat and power engineering, alternative fuels and environmental protection", as well as students in the 2nd and 3rd year of the specialty "Ecology".
"We joined the implementation of the ecological initiative "Large-scale afforestation of Ukraine" by planting forest crops, namely Scots pine seedlings on the territory of the Malopereshchepynske Forestry of the Poltava Forestry State Enterprise.
The significant scale of destruction of the forest fund of Ukraine can lead to an ecological disaster. The quality of forest resources is deteriorating significantly. The largest area in forest plantations is occupied by young trees and middle-aged plantations, and only 10 and 7 percent of ripening and ripe stands, respectively.
In terms of forest cover, Ukraine is among the youngest countries in Europe. And the role of forests in the quality of human life is very significant. Therefore, it is extremely urgent today to implement measures for the preservation and reproduction of forests," – said Doctor of Technical Sciences, Head of the Department of Applied Ecology and Nature Management of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Olena Stepova.
"Green country" is a program of the President of Ukraine, which sets the goal of planting 1 billion new trees in 3 years, and in 10 years – to increase the area of forests in Ukraine by 1 million hectares. The main goal of the project is to preserve the forest fund of Ukraine, the proper protection and reproduction of forests; to create favorable conditions for conducting forestry on the basis of sustainable development, taking into account natural conditions.
Earlier, scientists of the Polytechnic held the all-Ukrainian scientific and practical seminar "Environment and human health".
