It should be recalled that in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic of 22 November 2022, the Czech government awarded 8 state scholarships for Ukrainian citizens aged 18 and over in 2023 to study Czech language, literature, culture and history at the Summer Schools of Slavonic Studies in the Czech Republic.
It is pleasant to note that two of the 8 scholarships were awarded to master’s translation students of Poltava Polytechnic, Sofiia Dmytriuk and Yana Kharchenko. In particular, Sofiia Dmytriuk studied Czech at Masaryk University in Brno (Czech Republic) from 22 July to 19 August 2023.
The future translator Yana Kharchenko took part in the Summer School of Slavonic Studies at Palacký University in Olomouc, where she studied the Czech language, literature and traditions from 15 July to 13 August 2023.
The student began to actively learn Czech to broaden her cultural outlook, travelled extensively, and shared her impressions upon her return to the university.
“It was extremely interesting to try this programme for myself, as it differs from the Erasmus+ youth exchanges I have participated in many times before. It was a new format for me. Representatives of 47 countries could take part in this training. During my stay there, I met people from different European countries, as well as students from the UK, America, Canada and Asia.
The students were divided into groups according to their level of Czech language proficiency, and over the next four weeks, everyone had the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills by one level. As it was my first experience of learning Czech, I achieved A1 level.
Classes were held in the morning, and in the afternoon there were various workshops, activities and city tours. Everyone was also free to allocate their time and explore Olomouc on their own. On Saturday or Sunday, students went on full-day excursions together with the organisers.
It is worth noting that during the Summer School, students from all over the world repeatedly asked about the situation of the full-scale invasion and wished our country victory. At such sensitive moments, you realise that Ukraine has enormous support abroad, much more than we could have imagined.
At the end of the course, the university held a ceremony where the participants received certificates and symbolic gifts as a memento.
I am sincerely grateful to the organisers of the Summer School of Slavonic Studies in Olomouc, as well as to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for the opportunity to join this programme and learn more about the Czech Republic! I am sincerely grateful to Anna Pavelieva for her help in preparing documents and her support at all stages of the programme!” – said a participant of the programme, Yana Kharchenko.
It should be recalled that recently, the participants of the long-term academic mobility programme talked about the peculiarities of studying in Greenland, and five female philology students are doing an internship at the international department of the Romanian partner university.
In the summer, a Poltava Polytechnic scientist took part in the working meetings of the Eurodoc delegation in Kyiv, a student of our university joined the volunteer programme of the European Solidarity Corps, and a university scientist participated in the Summer School dedicated to innovative means, strategies and approaches to improving the teaching of English to Ukrainians.
Earlier, a philology student became a participant of the Erasmus+ youth worker mobility project in Turkey, a student of Poltava Polytechnic became a participant of the grant programme “Study Tours to Poland”, a philology student became a participant of the youth exchange dedicated to inclusion in Romania, students of Polytechnic took part in the youth exchange dedicated to discrimination and gender inequality, studied the preservation of natural resources and economic growth of young people through a healthy lifestyle, a student-translator took part in a youth project against discrimination, xenophobia and bullying; Polytechnic students took part in the Erasmus+ project dedicated to the development of environmental awareness among Europeans and held a charity auction; philology students mastered practical skills in the field of ecology and environmental protection, considered the problem of alcohol addiction and methods of combating it, raised awareness of cultural diversity, studied the problem of migrants and internally displaced persons.
