Scientist of Poltava Polytechnic takes part in International 15th fib PhD Symposium 2024

Doctoral student of the Department of Building Structures of Poltava Polytechnic Olha Harkava took part in the 15th fib PhD Symposium, held at Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The scientist presented the results of her own research with the report “Experimental Research of Biaxially Bended Reinforced Concrete Columns Manufactured on Granite Sifting”.

The international scientific event was held on 28-30 August 2024 and brought together more than 250 scientists from 72 universities of the world. National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” was the only higher education institution of Ukraine to join this large-scale scientific and educational event.

The PhD Symposium, held by the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib) every two years, is an important event for scientists working on their PhD theses in the field of reinforced concrete structures. During the event, representatives of the scientific community have a unique opportunity to present their own achievements, exchange innovative ideas and receive useful advice from experienced professionals.

At the opening of the symposium, the participants were welcomed by Professor György L. Balázs, Honorary President of fib, founder of the PhD Symposium, Professor Balázs Kövesdi, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at BME, Professor László Kollár, Secretary General of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szabolcs Farkas, President of the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, and Professor Steven Foster, President of fib. The speakers created a warm, friendly atmosphere that facilitated communication, exchange of scientific ideas and networking.

The symposium was held in five parallel sessions, where the issues of calculating the bearing capacity as well as designing reinforced concrete structures, monitoring their technical condition, researching bridges, dams, tanks and tunnels, and innovations in the manufacture of reinforced concrete structures were discussed.

Scientist of Poltava Polytechnic Olha Harkava presented the results of her research work under the supervision of Head of the Department of Building Structures, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Andrii Pavlikov at the symposium, delivering the report “Experimental Research of Biaxially Bended Reinforced Concrete Columns Manufactured on Granite Sifting”.

In her report, Olha Harkava presented the results of experimental tests on fine-grained concrete columns based on granite screenings, conducted at the laboratory of the Department of Building Structures of Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic. The scientist noted that stone crushing plants produce crushed stone by-products, namely granite screenings, which can reach 16% of the main product. Since granite screenings are not inferior to crushed stone made of the same stone in terms of their properties, however, their cost per cubic metre is significantly lower, making them a common raw material. In view of this, the use of granite screenings in the production of various reinforced concrete structures is a promising area.

The paper analyses the strength and deformation characteristics of fine-grained concrete as part of reinforced concrete columns, compares the experimental results with theoretical calculations of the strength of obliquely compressed columns. The scientist experimentally confirmed the possibility of using stone crushing plant waste, in particular granite screenings, for the manufacture of fine-grained concrete of obliquely compressed reinforced concrete columns.

According to the scientist, the participation in the important international symposium allowed her to enrich her experience and improve her scientific level, as well as to present the results of the theoretical and experimental researches conducted at the laboratory of the Department of Building Structures of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”.

As a result of her participation in the Symposium, Olha Harkava received an international certificate and published a scientific article.

Recently, the head of the Department of Fine Arts took part in a series of events organised by the International Academy of Ceramics (ICA), and the philology scientist took part in a large-scale EAIE event in Toulouse.

Earlier, the architecture student took part in the Summer School for Urban Planning and Design in Lübeck.
