Scientist of Polytechnic Learned about New Possibilities in Digital Scientific Communication

The interface of the Web of Science Core Collection was updated in January, 2021, with new functions added. The Clarivate company invited scientists to take part in a series of webinars about improving their skills of using this platform. PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor of Construction and Civil Engineering Department of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management (ERIACLM) Oleksandr Zyma participated in the course.

The new interface includes an advanced search function to solve more complicated search tasks. The analyzing, saving and editing mechanisms were also changed.

In January-February this year, Clarivate's Expert for Informational and Analytical Resources and Teaching Iryna Tykhonova held webinars at the Webex online platform.

“Poltava Polytechnic has a high level of scientific and publication activity and is a leader of scientific activity in Ukraine, which is proved by high positions in national and international rankings. We constantly do both the scientific and teaching work and professional self-improvement. I took part in five webinars on different topics related to the Web of Science platform and scientist’s publication activity. It is important for every scientific worker who has their own scientific works, including articles, monographs, collective works, student books, conference collections, patents etc. We covered in detail the difficulties that one can face while searching for works by a certain author at the Web of Science Core Collection. I have already used the knowledge myself,” PhD, Associate Professor Oleksandr Zyma commented.

The EndNote reference manager of Clarivate Analytics allows to create a publication collection according to the topic of research and greatly simplifies the process of formatting articles for a certain publisher. Open access has changed the model of scientific communication in the whole world. On February, 14, 2002, the Budapest Open Access Initiative was published.

“An old tradition and a new technology have converged to make possible an unprecedented public good. The old tradition is the willingness of scientists and scholars to publish the fruits of their research in scholarly journals without payment, for the sake of inquiry and knowledge. The new technology is the internet. The public good they make possible is the world-wide electronic distribution of the peer-reviewed journal literature and completely free and unrestricted access to it by all scientists, scholars, teachers, students, and other curious minds,”the document stated..

The movement for open access to scientific publications was developed because of the increase of prices on scientific journals and the intensive development of information technology. Two ways of open access are now realized: archives of open access (“the green way”) that offer scientists to self-archive their works, and journals of open access (“the gold way”), that introduce a new financial model, in which the process of scientific publication is paid by authors of institutions and not the subscribers of the journal.

On 4 September 2018, a group of national research funding organisations, with the support of the European Commission and the European Research Council (ERC), announced the launch of cOAlition S, an initiative to make full and immediate Open Access to research publications a reality, and it was going to be launched in 2020, but was postponed till 2021 for the research society to adapt to changes. Open Access will be the default method of sharing new results of reviewed scientific researches in any field and in any country.
