Scientists from 12 Countries Share Innovative Approaches to Foreign Language Teaching

On May 5, National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” held the VII International Conference “Innovative Technology in the Context of Foreign Languages Teaching” within the XV All-Ukrainian Scientific Festival. Ukrainian and foreign scientists discussed the pressing issues of foreign philology and intercultural communication, the innovative methods and technologies of foreign language teaching in the secondary and higher education institutions.

Scientists from 12 Countries Share Innovative Approaches to Foreign Language Teaching

Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” has hosted the VII International Conference “Innovative Technology in the Context of Foreign Language Teaching”, which has already become traditional and is held annually in spring.

The conference was co-organized by National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, the British Council in Ukraine, the US Embassy in Ukraine, Bialystok University of Technology (Poland), Santa Fe College (the USA), International Research University of Hebei (China), and International Humanitarian University (Odesa, Ukraine).

More than 130 participants from 12 countries including the USA, Brazil, the UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Croatia, Poland, China, Kuwait, South Africa, and Sudan joined the scientific event. Various aspects of linguistic studies were presented by scientists from 14 Ukrainian cities, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Kropyvnytskyi, Mykolaiiv, Lviv, Lutsk, Khmelnytskyi, Odesa, Starobilsk and Poltava.

The conference was ceremonially opened by Vice-Rector for Scientific and International Affairs of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Svitlana Sivitska who greeted the participants on behalf of Rector Volodymyr Onyshchenko and emphasized that the number of international participants at this conference has been growing with every year, in particular, there are even more partner universities now, including Santa Fe College, Sao Paolo University, international organizations, such as the Peace Corps in Ukraine, the British Council in Ukraine and so on.

The greetings were continued by Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs of Santa Fe College Vilma Fuentes (Florida, USA), Director of Technical Support Programs at Peace Corps in Ukraine Zhanna Hrytsenko and PhD, Dean of Faculty of Humanities at Poltava Polytechnic Anna Ageicheva, who wished that everybody had successful presentations, interesting scientific discussions and new scientific discoveries during the event.

“It is important to keep developing and deepening the partnerships with international organizations and higher education institutions on the joined work on scientific problems that are discussed at the conference, in particular, with the US Embassy in Ukraine, Peace Corps in Ukraine, British Council in Ukraine, Santa Fe College (USA), Sao Paolo University (Brazil), Bialystok University of Technology (Poland), International Research University (China), V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University,” Dean of Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Anna Ageicheva commented.

According to PhD in Philology, Head of General Linguistics and Foreign Language Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Alla Bolotnikova, the tradition of holding the annual International Conference is caused by the need to discuss the pressing issues of foreign philology and intercultural communication, the innovative methods and technologies in foreign language teaching at the secondary and higher education institutions, the aspects of intellectual property.

The conference was moderated by Senior Lecturer of General Linguistics and Foreign Language Department Yuliia Hunchenko.

Participants worked in the following sections:

  • The current issues of foreign philology and translation studies:
  • Intercultural communication;
  • The innovative methods and technologies of teaching foreign languages at higher education institutions;
  • The word and the text in the cultural space;
  • The aspects of intellectual property in the higher education system.

During the plenary sitting of the conference, the listeners’ attention was captured by presentations about the international cooperation and integration in the education field by Jessica Cassidy, Coordinator of International Education at Santa Fe College (Florida, USA); Liliia Bezuhla, Doctor of Philology, Professor of German Philology and Translation Department of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, who talked about German proverbs and their pragmatic potential in a dialogical discourse. The problem of the humanization of our society, the comparison of national spirit and the general human universal views were discussed by Doctoral Student of H. S. Kostiuk Institute of Psychology of the National Academy of Psychological Sciences of Ukraine Svitlana Sharkova and David Manning, Professor of Social and Behavioristic Sciences Department of Santa Fe College.

An old friend of our university, German language teacher, Speaker of the German Speaking Club of Poltava Polytechnic Norbert Mueller described the main factors that influence the development of communication culture in people who use new technology for communication directly. The observations about the role of speaking club in English language learning were presented by Speaker of the English Speaking Club of our univeristy Alex Purcell (the UK).

The pressing problem of the technological development of countries was covered by Professor Branimir Cvetkovic (Norway/Croatia). The possibilities of the stimulation of the students’ personal and intellectual development with the help of information and communication technology and their psychological and pedagogical aspects were presented by Associate Professor of Translation and Foreign Languages Department of the National Metallurgy Academy of Ukraine, PhD in Psychology Nataliia Sharkova.

Doctor of Philology, Professor of Sao Paolo University (Brazil) Regiani Zacarias talked about the very relevant problem of today - the global processes of the modern world that cause the tranformations of the traditional education system.

Last year, the scientists of Faculty of Humanities held a round table with the academic community of Sao Paolo University (USP) during which they discussed the peculiarities of teaching foreign languages at Ukrainian and Brazilian higher education institutions.

After the conference, the presenters’ articles will be published in the Scientific Newsletter of the International Humanitarian University.

Ukrainian and foreign scientists mentioned the undoubtful relevance, the high methodological and organizational level of the conference, and are thankful to the administration, the academicians, and General Linguistics and Foreign Language Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” for the understanding of the importance of foreign language learning in the modern world and the professional level of the conference; to the participants for their informational presentations; to the organizational committee for their active participation in the VII International Conference “Innovative Technology in the Context of Foreign Language Teaching”.
