“Sikorsky Challenge 2022”: Polytechnic scientists present their startup projects at the Innovation Festival

Scientists of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” took an active part in the 11th Festival of Innovation Projects “Sikorsky Challenge 2022: Innovative Transformation of Ukraine”, at which they presented their own startup projects dedicated to monitoring the state of atmospheric air pollution and designed to provide temporary or permanent electricity supply to various civilian and military facilities.

“Sikorsky Challenge 2022”: Polytechnic scientists present their startup projects at the Innovation Festival

Scientists of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” became active participants of the XI Festival of innovative projects “Sikorsky Challenge 2022: Innovative Transformation of Ukraine”, which took place on October 26-28, 2022 at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. This year’s large-scale scientific event was devoted to the discussion of the post-war Ukraine reconstruction paradigm, which should be based on the rapid and effective implementation of innovative technologies and developments in all areas of security, defense and the country's economy. The organizers of the Festival were the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the All-Ukrainian Innovation Ecosystem “Sikorsky Challenge Ukraine”.

The main events of the Festival were the international forum “Platform of Innovative Transformation of Ukraine” on the basis of the All-Ukrainian innovation ecosystem “Sikorsky Challenge Ukraine” and the final of the startup competition in five sections:

  • Defense and security. Aviation and space;
  • Infrastructure and industrial hi-tech;
  • Information technologies, digital country, cyber security;
  • Biomedical engineering and human health;
  • Environmental and energy security.

Scientists of the Poltava Polytechnic presented two of their own startup projects at the Festival of Innovations – “City Air Dust” and the project “Photoelectric installation with energy storage”, developed by the joint efforts of teachers of the Educational and Research Institute of Information Technologies and Robotics, the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas of the Poltava Polytechnic.

Project No. 69 “City Air Dust”, prepared by scientists Yurii Holik, Olena Stepova and Nataliia Maksiuta, aims to initiate a new approach to monitoring the condition of atmospheric air pollution and highlighting the results through a notification system, which includes a new idea of data visualization in a planar display.

The project is intended for all those interested in the condition of atmospheric air, in particular for the state, enterprises, scientists, and the public. Analytical studies of public monitoring are transformed into user-friendly thematic maps of atmospheric air pollution. IT and technical support for the project was provided by Andrii Akusok and Anastasiia Kornishyna.

Project No. 72 “Photoelectric installation with energy storage” consists in the development of a device that combines the functions of converting solar energy into electrical one with the possibility of its simultaneous storage in a kinetic storage device. The developers of this project were scientists Oleksandr Shefer, Vasyl Halai, Oleksandr Laktionov, Ruslan Zakharchenko and Ruslan Boriak. A specialist in power supply and automated control systems Andrii Tretiak was engaged in planning, analysis and development of solutions. A specialist in alternative energy with hybrid storage systems Nataliia Savchenko was engaged in finance and solution development.

The project is designed to provide temporary or permanent power supply to various civilian and military facilities with a capacity of 200-3000W.

It should be recalled the All-Ukrainian innovation ecosystem “Sikorsky Challenge Ukraine” was created on the basis of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and the Science Park “Kyivska Polytechnika”, and the presented startup-winners conclude protocols of intent with real investors and begin preparations for a joint implementation of the project. Scientists from leading Ukrainian higher education institutions and state scientific institutions have the opportunity to learn from well-known business partners who specialize in startups, receive the necessary qualified consultations and mentoring support, communicate with experts as well as investors.

Recently, philology scientists discussed effective cases of specialists’ foreign language training, scientists from different parts of our country discussed practical cases of effective participation in the Horizon Europe for Ukraine project, the Polytechnic team became a semi-finalist in the startup project competition from Create Creative Entrepreneurs, and Poltava Polytechnic joined the international educational project.

Earlier, Polytechnic ecologists held an All-Ukrainian scientific and practical seminar, university scientists presented success stories of participation in Erasmus+ projects, and a philologist shared the benefits of the European Solidarity Corps volunteer programs.
