Every year, in September, the season of sports games in mini-football and beach football among lecturers and students of the university starts at the modern sports locations of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic". In mid-September, a memorial tournament in mini-football in memory of the rector of the university, Professor Oleksandr Onyshchenko, took place on the sports ground of Poltava Polytechnic.
The traditional Poltava Polytechnic tournament "Commonwealth Cup" among the teams of scientific and pedagogical staff and students of structural subdivisions of the university unites fans of a healthy lifestyle and professional athletes through sports and competitive activities and popularizes physical activity among modern students. The competitions of the previous Cup were held in 2019, when the picked team of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas won a convincing victory.
Eight teams took part in this year's confrontation in mini-football, which included scientific and pedagogical staff and students of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law; the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas; the Educational and Research Institute of Information Technologies and Robotics; Educational and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management; Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports; Faculty of Humanities; Poltava College of Oil and Gas and Myrhorod Vocational College named after Mykola Gogol.
"Dear friends, lecturers and students, I am extremely glad to welcome you to the sports tournament – "Commonwealth Cup", launched by the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic". Last year, the global pandemic COVID-19 made its adjustments, we took a forced pause, and today we are returning to the continuation of another sporting tradition of Poltava Polytechnic, which strengthens the corporate spirit, and warm, friendly relations between lecturers and students.

I wish you complete pleasure from the game, bright moments on the football pitch, and let friendship win!" – congratulated the football players and fans the rector of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic", head of the separate unit of the NGO "Sports Student Union of Ukraine" in Poltava region, Doctor of Economics, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko.
Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports Lina Rybalko wished teams sports zeal, vitality, bright spectacular game and enchanting sports victories.
"With successful performances at numerous All-Ukrainian competitions in various sports, Ukrainian Football and Mini-Football Championships, sports tournaments among student teams of higher education institutions, Poltava Polytechnic reliably maintains leading positions among popular Ukrainian higher education institutions and confirms the status of one of the most "sports" universities in Ukraine. The key word in the name of the tournament is the word "friendship", so I wish you to spend time in the warmest and friendly atmosphere among friends and peers! Wish you zeal, life inspiration and relentless movement forward", - the head of one of the youngest structural subdivisions of the university greeted the participants of the tournament.
Head of the Trade Union Committee of Students and Postgraduates of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Oleksandr Drobotia also noted the excellent material and technical base of the university and the extremely high sports potential of university students and graduates.
The team captain of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas, the winner of the previous "Commonwealth Cup" Oleksandr Pysarenko solemnly hoisted the flag of Ukraine before the competition. Nadiia Sadova, a student of the Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law, greeted the participants with vocal compositions. The first game was played by the teams of Myrhorod Vocational College named after Mykola Gogol and the Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law.
The football tournament lasted for three days in a row (on October 5-7), the games in mini-football were held on the sports grounds of Poltava Polytechnic. The main referee was the national category referee, football coach, senior lecturer of the Department of Physical Education of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Oleksii Vorobiov. Sports matches captured the bright game of opponents and tense moments, meanwhile the fans actively supported their favorite teams.
This year's top three leaders are:
- the team of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas, winner of the "Commonwealth Cup" in 2019;
- the team of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports;
- the team of Poltava College of Oil and Gas.
The team of scientific and pedagogical staff and students of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" won the "Commonwealth Cup" for the second time in a row. The bronze medalist of the tournament was the team of the separate structural subdivision "Poltava College of Oil and Gas" of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic". The team of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports won the silver medals.

This sporting event has undoubtedly entered the history of Poltava Polytechnic with another bright page. After all, not every Poltava university has a creative "lecturer and student" tandem, who work for a common result and worthily represent the educational institution on the best sports grounds in the country. I am increasingly convinced that the university synergy prevails not only in education and science, but also in the love of sports, and everyone who has ever been on the football pitch will understand the healing effect of this sport," – said the rector of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic", head of a separate subdivision of the NGO "Student Sports Union of Ukraine" in Poltava region, Doctor of Economics, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko.
The winners and prize-winners of the tournament were awarded with cup and honorary decorations of the National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic".
It should be recalled that at the end of 2020, the Poltava Polytechnic team entered the TOP-5 of the strongest student football teams in Ukraine.
