PhD in Philology, Associate Professor at the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the Faculty of Humanities of Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic Anna Pavelieva completed the two-week course on improving the speaking skills required for IELTS.
“Macquarie University is one of the best Australian universities, first of all known for its Department of Linguistics. That’s why the courses developed by specialists of this higher education institution have not only theoretic but also practical value,” Anna Pavelieva said. “The course is divided into two weeks with 23 and 18 chapters (steps) respectively. Every chapter is dedicated to a certain type of mistakes connected with reading, writing and speaking skills. After learning the theory, the participants take tests, in which they have to record 3-7 audio files with answers to the offered questions, and discuss the presented pieces of advice with other participants of the course online.”
The topics discussed included a wide range of linguistic problems, starting with phrasal verbs and idioms and ending with building complex sentences, as well as the most common grammatical mistakes and the correct intonation in an English sentence. “Those are relevant and at the same time problematic aspects for the school leavers taking EIE and for the students taking SEE. So the new knowledge will be useful for practical English classes both with the translation students and the students of other university departments,” Anna Pavelieva commented.
For the academic staff of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, summer is not only the vacation and rest time, but also a good chance for further professional development and getting new knowledge. After the end of academic year, teachers continue working, concentrating fully on self-development, but due to the international flights being limited during the pandemic, they join educative courses online.
