Majors of the professional financial and credit cycle are taught on the basis of a training bank created at the Department, using real production programs provided by commercial banks and in the Department's branch, which operates directly in a branch of one of the commercial banks in Poltava.

January 22, 2001 order of the Rector of Poltava State Technical University named after Yuri Kondratyuk was created the Department of Finance. The rapid development of the financial and credit system of our country required training of qualified specialists of this profile. Since 90 years at the university has already conducted training in economic direction, and as pointed monitor their employment - most work is found in the financial and banking sector, but the general economic training does not fully satisfy the employers. That is why it is necessary to create a powerful center of training for financial and credit sector, and what was the newly created Department of Finance.
On the first day of the department was headed by Vladimir Onishchenko - a specialist who has at the time of the department creation a considerable practical experience in the financial and credit sector, academic achievements and teaching skills, several years combining work the head of a large unit of one of the leading commercial banks in Ukraine and teaching. This combination of practical knowledge and scientific research was the basis for the creation of a new type of department: mobile, energetic, creating new approaches to teaching and research work.
Annually department produces about 200 professionals who are educated full-time, distance learning and as a second degree. For 18 years the department was released nearly 500 masters and specialists in licensed areas. The distinction is versatile graduates received professional skills, the applicability of the obtained profession in any area of the economy, from government agencies to the private business sector. Under his leadership, the staff of the department provided a positive dynamics of the main indicators of development in the main directions of activity aimed at achieving the high quality of educational services and the growth of the role of the department as a powerful scientific and initial center of training of the highest quality specialists. For many years, the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation has been a leader in the ranking of University departments in terms of scientific, educational and international activities.
Since 2001, the Department has been operating a scientific school in the field of "Security-oriented economic management: state, region, enterprise" under the direction of the Rector, Doctor of Economics, Professor, Honored Worker of Education of Ukraine, Chairman of the Council of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions of 3-4 accreditation levels of Poltava Region, Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal "Economy and Region" Volodymyr Onyshchenko on issues of:
- economic and financial security of Ukraine in terms of unstable development of the national economy;
- formation of organizational and economic foundations for preventing threats to the socio-economic security of Ukraine;
- economic efficiency and social stability of regional development in the system of ensuring economic security of Ukraine;
- formation and implementation of financial and budgetary policy in the context of decentralization;
- investment policy in the national economy of Ukraine and its innovative development;
- ensuring energy security of Ukraine and energy efficiency of the national economy;
- corporate finance and financial management;
- information and analytical support for the development of business entities.
The scientific school has 5 doctors of sciences, 11 candidates of sciences, postgraduate students and undergraduates conducting research. Over the period of the School's existence, 35 PhD and 6 doctoral theses have been defended by the Department's postgraduate students, PhD candidates and doctoral students.
International activity of the Department of Finance, Banking and Taxation is carried out in the following main areas: scientific and scientific and technical cooperation with foreign organizations, participation in international conferences, cooperation with international granting organizations, publication of scientific papers in foreign publications, preparation of methodological support and teaching of disciplines for foreign students, training of specialists for foreign countries (educational sphere), inter-university cooperation and international scientific and technical cooperation.
The Department has established international cooperation with the Bialystok University of Technology (Poland), Opole University of Technology (Poland), ISMA University (Latvia), University of National and World Economy (Bulgaria), University of North (Croatia), University of Alba Iulia (Romania). The staff of the Department is a regular participant in international scientific and practical conferences and symposia. Within the framework of international cooperation, teachers improve their qualification level during internships, gaining experience and disseminating information about the department's activities in other countries.
Development of international joint educational programs, in particular double diploma programs, is one of the priority areas of the Department.
The Department is the absolute leader in the university and the region in terms of participation in international educational projects of the Erasmus+ programs of the European Union and the German Society for International Cooperation GIZ.
