On March 8, 2022, the Council of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) decided to suspend cooperation with the Russian Federation and its institutions, as well as to abolish observer status for Russia.
Founded after World War II, CERN aimed to unite nations to develop science in the field of the peaceful atom. A full-scale military invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine is contrary to the organization's values, so 23 CERN member states strongly condemned Russia's actions and expressed condolences over the deaths and humanitarian consequences of the aggressor’s inhumane actions. The involvement of Belarus in the illegal use of force against Ukraine was also condemned.
Since Ukraine is an associate member of CERN, and Ukrainian scientists are actively involved in many of the laboratory’s experiments and activities, the Council decided to support and to encourage their initiatives in the field of high-energy physics.
It should be recalled that the European Commission suspended all cooperation with Russian organizations in research, science and innovation, as well as the European Foundation for Education has abandoned activities in Russia and the Republic of Belarus.
