Criminal Mathematics: Students Learn About Applying IT and Mathematical Modeling In Forensic Examination

On September 24, 2020, the Department of Further and Applied Mathematics held an open scientific webinar “Mathematical Modeling and IT in Forensic Examinations” for the IT students of the Education and Research Institute of Information Technology and Mechanotronics. The IT specialists of Poltava Scientific and Research Forensic Center were invited to the seminar.

This summer, National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” and Poltava Scientific and Research Forensic Center of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of Ukraine signed the Memorandum on Cooperation and Partnership. Since then, the criminal experts participate in scientific events for students of different specializations.

The moderators of the event were the leading specialist of the Support Department of Poltava Scientific and Research Forensic Center of MHA of Ukraine Olha Marchyshynets, forensic expert of the Department of IT Research Iryna Redchuk, and PhD in Mathematics, Associate Professor of the Department of Further and Applied Mathematics of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Nataliia Ichanska.

The experts of Poltava Scientific and Research Forensic Center of MHA of Ukraine delivered presentations “The relevant problems of forensic technical examinations” (by Yaroslav Kolisa, Senior Forensic Expert of the Department of Computing, Technical and Telecommunication Research), “Improving the quality of graphic images with Adobe Photoshop” (by Oleksandr Yatsenko, Senior Forensic Expert of the Department of IT Research), “The basic training of a forensic expert in the IT field” (by Klavdiia Solovchuk, Forensic Expert of the Department of Computing, Technical and Telecommunication Research). Certain examples of criminologists’ work were presented with real cases, in particular, the case of the hacker hacking the personal accounts of Poltavavodokanal clients.

“Approximately 65 participants joined the event. These were the first-year students of the specializations No. 113 Applied Mathematics, 122 Computer Sciences, 123 Computer Engineering, 174 Telecommunication, the graduate students of Applied Mathematics and the members of the students’ math club functioning at the department. The event program included presentations by both the experts and the university representatives. My presentation covered the peculiarities of training the students in Applied Mathematics. Our graduate student Vladyslav Demianenko delivered a presentation on the possibilities of artificial intelligence. The cooperation with the center will continue; we have arranged joined scientific seminars and internships for students,” Nataliia Ichanska said.
