The European Heritage Days were celebrated in Poltava for the second time. The joined project of the European Council and the Ministry of Culture and Informational Policy of Ukraine aims to promote the knowledge about cultural achievements of Ukrainian regions. This year, the project was focused on the educational heritage of Poltava and the topic “Heritage and Education: Lessons Worth Revising”.
From September 18, to September 22, 5 free excursions were planned. On September 20, National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” became the location for the excursion with elements of theater “Panas Myrnyi’s Educational Space”. The visitors were met and guided by students dress like the students of Poltava Institute of Noble Maidens, creating an authentic atmosphere of the 19th century.
“Poltava citizens will have a unique possibility to hear little-known information in an unusual form with theatrical elements. “Panas Myrnyi’s Educational Space” is a touristic route around historic places connected with cultural heritage and education. The histories will be presented at such locations of Poltava old town as Poltava Institute of Noble Maidens, Poltava City Garden, Poltava Literary and Memorial Museum of Panas Myrnyi and so on. We want to understand better and rethink the history, modern life and the future of our education,” the organizers said.
“Within the European Heritage Days in Poltava, the importance of famous people’s cultural heritage was in the focus, in particular, Panas Myrnyi’s work and its role in building the modern education. Our university holds a joined event with Poltava Literary and Memorial Museum of Panas Myrnyi, because we are proud of our own 200 year old cultural and educational tradition.
“Polytechnic became the first location for the people who care about the development of tourism in Poltava region, are interested in the scientific and literary heritage of famous Poltava citizens. The tour participants were able to learn about the aspects of educational activity of our education institution, an important object of cultural heritage of our city. The former Institute of Noble Maidens formed the spirit of nobility, love to our country and respect to the educational traditions. We hope for further fruitful cooperation with the educational and cultural establishments of our city,” the Deputy Head of the Committee of Tourism, Culture and Innovations of Poltava Trade and Industry Chamber, the Director of the Education and Research Institute of Finance, Economics and Management Iryna Chernysh.
The participants of the tour learned about the history of the Institute of Noble Maidens, visited Nadiia Kocherha People’s Museum of the University History, where the archive materials, personal belongings, books, jubilee publications showing the brightest moments of the history of the higher education institution are exhibited.
The European Heritage Days are the most widely celebrated participatory cultural event shared by the people of Europe. The Council of Europe launched the initiative in 1985, and in 1999 was joined by the European Union to create the joint action, which has continued up to the present day. Conceivably, the Programme, which can boast up to 20 million visitors every year, generates the greatest value, Euro for Euro, of any “European” cultural project.
Held in September each year, EHD events – often called Heritage Open Days - take place in the 50 countries party to the European Cultural Convention. During this time, doors are opened to numerous monuments and sites, allowing Europe’s citizens to enjoy free visits and learn about their shared cultural heritage and encouraging them to become actively involved in the safeguard and enhancement of this heritage for present and future generations.
New cultural initiatives are going to be implemented in Poltava in next three years involving the representatives of the scientific and cultural community of the city.
