Future professionals learn about the practical aspects of using a lie detector in the psychologist’s work

At the meeting of the Psychological Hub “School of Resilience”, students of 053 Psychology speciality of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” discussed the peculiarities of the work of practical psychologists of institutional organisations. Police psychologists joined the discussion of effective cases of psychological research using a lie detector and demonstrated the stages of conducting such research.

A meeting of Psychological Hub “School of Resilience” was held at the Department of Psychology and Pedagogy of Faculty of Philology, Psychology and Pedagogy of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, with students of different courses of speciality 053 Psychology of Poltava Polytechnic taking part in it.

Senior Psychologist of the Psychological Support Sector of the Personnel Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Poltava Region, Police Major Oleksandra Kikot and Senior Psychologist of the Personnel Sector of the Poltava District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Poltava Region, Police Lieutenant Yana Komar joined the discussion of the current issues of development and application of modern psychological science in the conditions of difficult challenges of today. The meeting of the Psychological Hub was moderated by the Head of the Department of Psychology and Pedagogy, Doctor of Philosophy Yevheniia Khomenko.

During the meeting, the police officers spoke about the specifics of the psychologists’ work within the structure of the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine as well as shared practical cases of polygraph use in psychological services’ work, discussing with the students the key aspects of creating comfortable conditions for respondents.

Psychology students saw first-hand how a lie detector works and learnt about methods of reading the body’s reaction to questions posed by a polygraph examiner. The future specialists also learned about the basic rules for installing sensors on the body of an interrogated person that do not cause any inconvenience.

The participants of the meeting were enthusiastic about interacting with the practising psychologists, had an active discussion and asked interesting questions, especially the students of Poltava Polytechnic were interested in the selection of appropriate professional techniques and their appearance, as well as the professional growth of the invited speakers.

Senior Psychologist of the Psychological Support Sector of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Poltava Region, Police Major Oleksandra Kikot shared her key professional skills and positively motivated future psychology specialists to continue their studies:

“The polygraph is very interesting as it gives you the opportunity to get to know a person in detail, to feel them, so that the test is as informative as possible. You have to understand that being a psychologist, a polygraph examiner, is a creative, interesting job that you just have to love. If you are passionate about your chosen profession, it is extremely cool, because nothing can replace people’s gratitude.

To be a quality specialist in this field, you must constantly develop your knowledge and skills, improve them, because this field is constantly evolving, new techniques are constantly emerging that you must know and be able to apply in practice.

Our Ministry of Internal Affairs is currently organising many trainings and lectures for its employees with the participation of foreign partners and psychotherapists who talk about new effective methods. We are learning and it is very exciting. Our profession is really important and I am so glad that you are all here. Remember that if you want something, you can do anything.”

The scientific and pedagogical workers and students of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” express their sincere gratitude to the Head of Psychological Support Department of the Personnel Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Poltava Region, Police Major Olena Demianyk for promoting the quality and effective educational process of the students majoring in Psychology at Poltava Polytechnic.

It should be recalled that polygraph examiners and lawyers discussed psychophysiological research using a lie detector, and psychology students are successfully mastering the skills of working with minors at the Educational and Diagnostic Centre of Psychological Expertise.

Earlier, legal scientists and polygraph examiners held a conference on the use of a polygraph under martial law, law enforcement officers held a training session on countering the most common gender stereotypes, court security guards and police officers held a training session on first aid and safety basics at the Polytechnic.
