Inclusive Ukraine: Teachers and Practitioners Discuss Creating an Inclusive Space

On December 9, teachers of Psychology and Pedagogy Department of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" held a round table titled "Inclusive Ukraine" during which they discussed the problems of educational barriers and the use of art practices in working with children with special educational needs.

Within the celebration of the 90th anniversary of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic", academic staff of Psychology and Pedagogy Department held a round table with the participation of leading rehabilitation specialists, teachers-methodologists of inclusive education centers.

The event was moderated by Doctor of Psychology, Professor, Deputy Head of Psychology and Pedagogy Department of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic" Svitlana Yalanska, who said that the topic of inclusiveness is still relevant, as it is incredibly important that the person is always put in the center of attention and the needs of everyone are taken into account. That is why Psychology and Pedagogy Department plans to open new specializations No. 053 "Psychology" and No. 012 "Preschool Education".

Nataliia Beseda (PhD in Pedagogy, Dean of Faculty of Sports) and the academic employees of Psychology and Pedagogy Department, including Svitlana Yalanska (Doctor of Psychology, Professor, Deputy Head of Psyhology and Pedagogy Department), Nataliia Saiko (Doctor of Pedagogy, Associate Professor), Nina Atamanchuk (PhD in Psychology, Associate Professor), Yurii Horbenko (PhD in Psychology, Associate Professor), Lesia Klevaka (PhD in Pedagogy, Associate Professor), Oleksandr Kornilov (Senior Assistant), Viktoriia Datsenko (Practical Psychologist of our university) and representatives of higher education institutions from all over Ukraine joined the discussion of barrier-free environment for people with disabilities.

"It is very pleasant to join such a relevant scientific event, since the round table aims to address the important questions related to free movement and the possibility to use the public places for the whole population. May you have interesting presentations and fruitful discussions!" PhD in Pedagogy, Dean of Faculty of Sports Nataliia Beseda said.

During the round table, the participants discussed the problems of educational barriers, inclusion in education institutions, and the use of art practices in working with children with special educational needs. The participants paid a great attention to the issues of providing feedback and implementing proven methods among specialists in the fields of general and correctional/special education, university teachers, students, children and youth with special educational needs and disabilities. The participants of the online meeting also watched a video about the wide opportunities of the powerful innovative educational and scientific center of Poltava region, one of the leading Ukrainian universities known far beyond the borders of the country, National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic". In September, Deputy Head of Psychology and Pedagogy Svitlana Yalanska presented a student book titled "Educational Curriculum on Inclusive Education". At the beginning of December, teachers of Psychology and Pedagogy Department held a virtual tour of Poltava Polytechnic.

At the end of the event, scientists and practitioners came to the conclusion that the optimal combination of measures taken to organize safe, independent movement possibilities for people with disabilities and other low-mobility population groups will create an accessible environment in Ukraine.
