On 26 March and 9 April, 2024, the first-year students of Educational and Research Institute of Information Technologies and Robotics of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, who are studying a wide range of relevant knowledge and practical skills in the “Computer Science” educational programme, had a great opportunity to acquire new professional competences in the field of machine learning.
Future IT specialists took part in a master class by a researcher at the University of Jena and NLP engineer-consultant at CHI Software Olha Kanishcheva. It is worth noting that the speaker has extensive practical and scientific experience in NLP (over 10 years), and her research is related to text summarisation, named object recognition, speech identification, etc. Olha Kanishcheva is a member of the SIGSLAV group, the Slavic language processing group, and the manager of the CLARIN k-centre for the Ukrainian language.
That is why students of Poltava Polytechnic had a great opportunity to gain relevant knowledge and understand how artificial intelligence, computer vision and neural networks work using simple, interesting examples. Using video cameras and the programming knowledge acquired at the university, the first-year students performed practical tasks aimed at implementing all the steps of the machine learning model life cycle.
