More Than Half Of Architecture Bachelor Students Defend Their Theses Excellently

For three days in a row, the Bachelor students of Architecture and Town Planning and an international master’s student who had studied at the two-year English-taught program were defending their theses. A French city quarter, Santa’s residence and abandoned industrial districts of Poltava were among the topics of the projects showing the readiness of the future specialists to change cities regardless of geography.

National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” accepts the modern challenges readily and organizes safe conditions for students and workers in any requirements of the time period.

The lockdown did not prevent the annual thesis defense from taking place. In particular for those specialties for which it is very difficult to present thesis projects online.

“The academic year ends during the lockdown. We’ve taken into account the peculiarities of those specialties for which it is technically very hard to decently present thesis projects, in particular the architects. The University Academic Board decided that the thesis defense should be held offline following all the anti-pandemic measures including temperature screening and with personal protection means. An important thing is that the students reacted positively to the decision of the Academic Board and prepared projects which can be introduced in a real economic sector not only in Ukraine, but also in Europe,” Rector of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko commented about the peculiarities of this academic year.

Hannanu Aimen from Algeria, graduate student of group 601ABi, was the first to finish studying on the two-year English-taught program which meets the requirements of the International Architects Organization. He developed the thesis project on the topic “The Formation of Multifunctional Buildings With the Modern Technologies and Landscape Design Elements”. His academic advisors were PhD in Architecture, Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture and Town Planning Liudmyla Shevchenko and PhD in Engineering, Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture and Town Planning Andrii Dmytrenko.

Architecture Bachelor student Olena Horbunova designed a French school in her thesis project and found the differences between education institutions in France and Ukraine (her academic advisor was PhD in Architecture, Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture and Town Planning Taras Rudenko), “I prepared a complex architectural project of an elementary school in Saint-Denis, France. It includes the general building plan, functional planning, and exterior. In general, this project can be adapted for Ukrainian realia, although there are certain differences between the two countries, such as that our schools are more closed, and in France the school can be combined with, for example, a community space.”

Assistant Professor at the Department of Architecture and Town Planning Andrii Koniuk explained, how the processes of preparation and presentation were organized, “From the moment the government allowed holding classes in groups of 10 people, we started holding consulting meetings with last-year students, and proposal defenses. In accordance with the anti-pandemic measures, we placed tables on appropriate distance and provided hand sanitizers. Only the student, their academic advisor and the commission members were present at the thesis defense. Everyone else could watch the defense online at the university YouTube channel.”

“The most interesting were the projects dedicated to the redevelopment of abandoned buildings (two projects were concentrated on Almaz cinema) and industrial territories in Poltava into community spaces (3 projects). Three works were designed within the program of the international contest in reconstructing the territory into a multi-comfort quarter in Saint-Denis, France. I would also like to mention a fascinating project on reconstructing Santa Klaus’s residence in Finland,” Director of ERIAC Oleksandr Zyma commented.

In conclusion, 27 Bachelor’s students of Education and Research Institute of Architecture and Construction defended their thesis projects, and 19 out of them received excellent marks!
