Two teams of National University "Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, team I-285 and M-301, were among the finalists of the Steel Freedom National Student Architectural Competition in 2020. They were consulted, supported and inspired by teachers of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management Oksana Dovzhenko, Pavlo Semko and Taras Rudenko.

Team I-285 chose the multi-functional sport and educational complex in Ivano-Frankivsk as their contest project task. The team members liked the uniqueness of this thematics, because it is possible to change and combine various styles, come up with interesting constructive schemes and original exterior ideas while creating such a project. The team consited of the following graduate students of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management: Dmytro Turchenko, Oleksandra Tsyhanok, Tetiana Sovenko (a winner of a student research article competition in building and construction), Valeria Honcharenko and fourth-year student, Winner of the Scholarship of the President of Ukraine Aram Karapetian. It is important to mention the participants’ professionalism and practical experience, as most of them combine studying with their professional activity in the building and architectural fields.

In accordance with the intended purpose of the building, the team decided to use triangle steel panels in its exterior design. Triangle is a simple but the most stable shape, a symbol of the main principles of sport, such as speed, distance, time. The combination of triangle panels with facade lightning would demonstrate the increasing speed of the modern life and give the direction for further development.

The organization of distanced team work and the necessity to work on the project online became a real challenge for the team.

“Last year, some of the team members were in different groups and reached the half-final, and some participated for the first time. We think that our project in a necessary practical experience, and we hope that next year we will be finalists,” the mentor of the team, teacher of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management, PhD in Engineering, Professor of Department of Constructions from Reinforced Concrete and Stone and the Strength of Materials Oksana Dovzhenko commented.

Poltava Polytechnic was represented in the final round of the Steel Freedom Competition in 2020 by the team M-301, which consisted of only one member - student of Education and Research Institute of Architecture, Construction and Land Management, winner of the competition in 2019 as a part of the team D-403 Yelyzaveta Khomych, who became the silver medal holder and the winner of the audience choice award in 2020.

The winner created a project of a stadium with 12770 sits. The project was ranked second, won the Audience Choice Awards and awards from the partners of the competition. The concept of the stadium is the creation of an Azov seagull form with the held of efficient steel construction. A seagull is the emblem and an informal symbol of the football club Mariupol. In the project, it is pictured flying over the wavy constructions which resemble the seaside.

In 2019, architecture and construction students became winners of the competition, and the community of Mariupol already started to implement the project of an administrative service center completed by our students.
