Scientist-philologist becomes participant in the focus session dedicated to the “Open Research Europe” platform

On November 9, 2022, the Head of the Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Philology, Psychology and Pedagogy, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, External Communication Coordinator of European Council for Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers (Eurodoc) Anna Pavelieva took part in the meeting of the Eurodoc Governing Council and in the focus session organized by Eurodoc together with the Czech National Library of Technology (NTK). The focus session was devoted to the discussion of the sustainable development strategy of the "Open Research Europe" (ORE) project. It is worth noting that for the first time in many recent years, the event took place in an offline format in the capital of the Czech Republic – Prague.

It should be recalled that in the spring of 2021, on the initiative of the European Commission, “Open Research Europe” (ORE) was created – a platform for publications with open access for the beneficiaries of Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. ORE offers rapid publication of various types of articles without editorial bias; all articles receive transparent peer review and are published under an open license. This platform is a significant step forward for open science in Europe. As an expert partner in the ORE project, Eurodoc ensures that the voices of postgraduate students and young scientists at the beginning of their scientific careers are heard.

For this purpose, the Eurodoc team planned a focus session in Lviv, which was supposed to take place at the end of March 2022, but was moved to Prague due to the martial law imposition and active hostilities on the territory of Ukraine.

Representatives of the Italian, Polish, Norwegian, Hungarian, Ukrainian, French, Czech, Slovenian, Swedish and Dutch national Eurodoc associations took part in this focus session aimed at discussing the concept of ORE and the reform of research evaluation, the various opportunities offered by the ORE platform (preprints, open peer review, publication of various research results), cooperation of Eurodoc with ORE and receiving feedback from young scientists – national associations  representatives.

Martin Andler, President of the Initiative for Science in Europe, which member Eurodoc is, joined the focus session and spoke to the participants about the importance of improving the young scientists careers at an early stage of work, attracting young researchers to science, as they are more open to challenges, innovations and experiments than researchers of the older generation.

Victoria Tsoukala, Open Science Specialist at the European Commission and DG RESEARCH, informed the audience about the ORE project main advantages and its bonuses for young scientists, the ORE activities in a policy context and the steps towards the Coalition for the Advancement of Research Assessment (CoARA), as well as explained how ORE is already supporting changes in the scientific researches evaluation.

The President of the European Council for Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers (Eurodoc), Oleksandr Berezko, introduced the focus session participants to the key principles of Eurodoc’s cooperation with ORE, Eurodoc’s policy on open science and the activities of Eurodoc’s Open Science Ambassadors, as well as the results of a survey of young scientists on Open Science knowledge self-assessment.

Giulia Malaguarnera, member of the Advisory Board at OpenAIRE and Eurodoc, secretary at the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA), presented new approaches to research data management at ORE and explained how to prepare research results data for shared use as well as increase the availability and reusability of spreadsheet data, how to select appropriate repositories, how to create links through “OpenAIRE Explore”.

Kelly Woods, deputy editor-in-chief at F1000, talked about the history of the reviewing scientific articles process, open review as a new approach to increasing the publications’ views and citations number and solving the young scientists issues, the peculiarities of reviewing on the ORE platform, checking articles by reviewers, other review models, etc.

Sebastian Dahle, Eurodoc Vice-President, informed the participants of the focus session about the status quo of how the scientific researches evaluation affects open science, presented the platform “Open Research Europe” as an amazing opportunity for the development of science in Europe and a major factor for the improvement of science in Europe as a whole, spoke about open science, the scientific researches evaluation at the current stage, the importance of signing the Agreement on reforming the research evaluation and the OPUS project.

After the focus session, a group discussion took place: all participants were divided into three groups, in which they had the opportunity to discuss in detail the aforementioned topics, in particular, the responsible use of metrics, qualitative evaluation of scientific research, requirements for dissertations as well as criteria for funding postgraduate and doctoral students, rehabilitation criteria and availability of ORE, issues of training postgraduates and doctoral students at the modern stage and academic freedom.

Previously, the Polytechnic scientist mastered the digital skills of working with young people, took a course within the Erasmus+ programme dedicated to the volunteer programs of the European Solidarity Corps, studied future skills needed by educators and scientists, underwent training on the digital transformation of youth organizations, increased economic literacy and labor legislation knowledge, studied international experience and best practices in waste recycling, improved practical skills in public speech presentation, took part in the Erasmus+ project in Turkey and studied media literacy in Leipzig.
