The World Para Swimming Championships ended at the Manchester Aquatics Centre in the British city of Manchester. At the prestigious sports tournament, 538 athletes from 67 countries of the world competed for the championship.
As part of the national team, the student of group 301-FS of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports of the National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Master of Sports of International Class of Ukraine in swimming Oleksii Virchenko won another gold medal. The athlete became the best at the distance of 50 meters freestyle in class S13 (among visually impaired athletes).
Gold, silver and bronze medals of the national team were also added to the treasury of awards by:
Denys Ostapchenko, a student of the Educational and Research Institute of Oil and Gas – 4 gold medals. The athlete won the championship at a distance of 50 meters on the backstroke in class S3 with a result of 45.95 seconds. Also, the swimmer became the best at distances of 50, 100 and 200 meters freestyle.
Yurii Shenhur, a student of the Educational and Research Institute of Finance, Economics, Management and Law – 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. The young man became a silver medallist at the distance of 100 meters on the backstroke (class S7).
Eduard Horodianyn, a student of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports, also performed well, entering the top five athletes in the 100-meter backstroke.
This tournament became the first and one of the main stages for qualifying for the 2024 Paralympics in Paris.

It should be recalled that Oleksii Virchenko became the gold medallist of the World Para Swimming Championship in the distance of 100 meters butterfly and won the bronze award of the Championship, covering the distance of 100 meters freestyle, and also became the best in the mixed relay. In May, the students became the absolute champions of the Para Swimming Cup of Ukraine.
Recently, the student Maksym Ovcharenko returned from China with the title of world champion in table tennis, and the teacher of the Poltava Polytechnic Oksana Hordiienko became the silver medallist of the European Championship in the classic bench press.
