Ukrainian Culture Days: Contribution of Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius In National Rebirth and Vyshyvanka Popularization

On May 21, the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation of the Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” held the annual students’ round table to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture.

The Students’ Scientific Round Table was held online as a Zoom video-conference, almost 100 participants joined it, among them were the students and teachers of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Myrhorod Art and Industrial College Named After M. Gogol and Poltava Oil and Gas College of Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic. This year, the round table was dedicated to the 175th anniversary of funding the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

The meeting of the students’ round table was opened by the Head of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Doctor of History, Associate Professor Iryna Perederii. The speaker emphasized the historical roots of the celebration, stressing the importance and relevance of honoring the memory of the first Slavic enlighteners - Saints Cyril and Methodius (Ukr. Kyrylo and Mefodii).

“The Czech Republic started celebrating the Day of the famous enlighteners in 1349, and Bulgaria - in 1851. In Ukraine, the first Ukrainian political organization in Kyiv bore the name of Cyril and Methodius - the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, which played one of the leading roles in the national cultural Rebirth of the 20th century, the uprising of national spirit at the Ukrainian territories and the activation of overall Slavic movement under the influence of the liberatory ideas of the period when the European revolutionary crisis developed - the Spring of Nations,” Iryna Perederii said.

The participants of the students’ round table were greeted by the Vice-Rector for the Scientific ans International Affairs of Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic, PhD in Economics, Associate Professor, Winner of the Award of the President of Ukraine for Young Scientists Svitlana Sivitska and the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic, PhD in Pedagogy, Associate Professor Anna Ageicheva. The speakers wished the participants fruitful work and interesting scientific discussion.

Documentation students of the Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” presented relevant and informative scientific reports which elaborated on the meaning of the appearance of the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the importance of the activity of its participants, proved that this event was a crucial point for establishing the Ukrainian nation and its culture. The work of the students’ round table was moderated by PhD in History, Associate Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation Olha Tievikova.

This year, the round table was held on the same date as the Vyshyvanka Day, so this combination of the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture and our unique Vyshyvanka Day was very symbolic. The participants of the round table joined the celebration by wearing vyshyvankas (traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts). They expressed their national and civic views, cultural education level and spiritual conscience.

The program of the meeting was full of interesting reports, the participants gave their presentations, discussed them and provided facts on the chosen topics confidently. The meting was very productive in the new form; it managed to popularize Ukrainian culture and traditions, inviting the youth to study their history.

Summarizing the round table meeting, the the Head of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Doctor of History, Associate Professor Iryna Perederii encouraged the students to continue strengthening the image of Ukrainian nation as highly educated, and to cherish our priceless treasure - our native language.

“Only the love to one’s own history, contribution to the cultural achievements of one’s nation are the basics of the moral and spiritual development of society,” Iryna Perederii emphasized.

The Day of Slavic Writing and Culture is celebrated every year on May 24, Ukraine started celebrating the day at the state level in 2004.
