Mobile Forensics: Experts Speak About Mathematical Methods of Investigating Crimes Connected With Phones

On October 29, teachers of Further and Applied Mathematics Department and IT specialists of Poltava Scientific and Research Forensic Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs held a joined open scientific webinar titled “Mobile Forensics: Mathematical Methods, Tasks and Technologies” for students of Education and Research Institute of Information Technology and Mechanotronics (ERIITM) of our university.

Within the Memorandum of Cooperation and Partnership with Poltava Scientific and Research Forensic Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine (PSRFC of MIA), teachers of Further and Applied Mathematics Department initiated holding an open scientific webinar. The high-qualified experts of PSRFC of MIA, including Ihor Volkodav, Klavdiia Solovchuk and Oleksandr Puzyr, joined the scientific event. Graduate students of the specialization No. 113 “Applied Mathematics” of ERIITM presented informative reports on the possibilities of using mathematical data while performing forensic investigation. The event was moderated by Olha Marchyshynets, Yaroslav Kolisa and Nataliia Ichanska, and technical support was provided by Dmytro Abrakhmanov and Oleksandr Yatsenko.

More than 80 people participated in the webinar, including first-year students of the specialization No. 113 “Applied Mathematics”, No. 122 “Computer Science”, No. 123 “Computer Engineering”, No. 174 “Telecommunications” and the members of the student mathematical club.

The participants were greeted by Deputy Head of PSRFC of MIA, Head of Forensic Research Department Olena Sakhnenko, Head of Information Technology Research Department of PSRFC of MIA Anton Kostenko, and Head of Further and Applied Mathematics Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Nataliia Ichanska, PhD.

The practical cases of crimes involving mobile phones were shared by Head of Computer and Telecommunications Research Department of PSRFC of MIA Ihor Volkodav (“Fishing on Android: Technical Side of the Problem”), Court Expert of Computer and Telecommunications Research Department of PSRFC of MIA Klavdiia Solovchuk (“Identification of Mobile Phones with IMEI”), and Court Expert of Computer and Telecommunications Research Department of PSRFC of MIA Oleksandr Puzyr (“Contrastive Analysis of Telegram, Viber and WhatsApp”).

Student of group 601PM of ERIITM of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Vladyslav Demianenko shared his own work titled “Compression Algorithms. Application Aspects”.

Head of Further and Applied Mathematics Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Nataliia Ichanska, PhD presented examples of solving applied tasks with ICT. According to the scientist, a real solution to the problem of teaching maths at school may lie in STEM education. Three key aspects have to be taken into account; firstly, the teacher’s role in education system should be increased, secondly, school science should be popularized, and thirdly, the application of mathematical knowledge in everyday life should be visualized.

After the end of the event, the organizers agreed to continue the partnership in the scientific and educational field, that is, to hold joined seminars and provide internships for the students of our university at the forensic center. IT students had earlier learned about the application of IT and mathematical modeling in forensic investigation, and law students learned about the operation of experts and a mobile forensic laboratory.
