OIL AND GAS ENGINNERING AND TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Scientific research at the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and Technology is based on the current problems of the Ukrainian oil and gas industry. Among the urgent tasks facing the scientific and technical specialists of the oil and gas industry is to increase the hydrocarbon recovery factor in existing fields and to develop a new, huge resource base (highly paraffinic viscous oil; Black Sea hydrates; low-permeability, clayey, deep-seated carbonate deposits; coal bed methane).

The Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and Technology staff focuses on achieving scientific and technical tasks.

The priority areas of the department's specialists activity are work on research topics:

1. Technology for the extraction of hard-to-recover hydrocarbons development (bitumen, high-viscosity oils, gas hydrates, etc.) based on physical and chemical processes (State registration number 0120U104892, supervisor: Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor I. Zezekalo, deadline: 2020 - 2024).

Purpose: to study the physical and chemical properties of heavy hydrocarbons in interaction with a low-temperature catalyst. To develop a technology and provide practical information to oil and gas companies for the implementation of the research methodology in the production of hard-to-recover hydrocarbons by low-temperature cracking.

2.  Development of technology for the drilling fluids and mud using for the building materials manufacture, structures and products or safe disposal (state registration No. 0120U104891, supervisor: PhD, Associate Professor V. Shulgin, deadline: 2020 - 2024).

Purpose: to develop a methodology for the drilling fluids and sludge using in the building materials manufacture, structures and products, or their safe disposal, depending on the fractions of the drilling fluids themselves. Investigation of physical and chemical drilling fluids and mud properties for the methodology of using them in the manufacture of building materials, structures and products or their safe disposal. Implementation of this methodology and develop technology for the use of drilling fluids and mud for oil and gas organizations.

In addition, under the direction of Professor Ihor Zezekalo, Doctor of Technical Sciences the research is being conducted in the following areas:

Intensification of hydrocarbon production from low-permeability reservoirs, such as low-permeability, clayey, deep carbonate deposits and sandstones, and deposits of high-viscosity tarry-paraffin oils and natural bitumen. In Ukraine, these deposits have enormous resources, but are not yet being developed, so their development is an urgent task of the present and future.

  • Intensification of hydrocarbon production from low-permeability reservoirs, such as low-permeability, clayey, deep carbonate deposits and sandstones, and deposits of high-viscosity tarry-paraffin oils and natural bitumen. In Ukraine, these deposits have enormous resources, but are not yet being developed, so their development is an urgent task of the present and future.
  • Solving the problem of well watering by predicting this process and finding the most effective chemical compositions and technologies with maximum consideration of reservoir physics, thermobaric conditions and watering level. It is especially important to introduce early waterflooding diagnostics and waterflood prevention technologies.
  • Hydrate formation, its prevention and gas production from gas hydrate deposits. To date, a laboratory base for researching hydrate formation processes in oil and gas production gathering and treatment systems has been created and continues to be improved, a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of hydrate formation inhibitors has been developed, and an alternative to methanol based on mixtures of thermodynamic and kinetic inhibitors is being sought. The company is also studying the concept of refusing to use inhibitors by organizing guaranteed removal of gas hydrate outside the problem area, including the use of gas hydrate itself as an adsorbent in gas treatment systems to reduce dew points, both in water and hydrocarbons.

Original energy-efficient and state-of-the-art technologies for the extraction of Black Sea hydrates, as well as their transportation and storage in ground storage facilities without reference to the gas transportation system are being developed.

  • The corrosion problems of oil and gas equipment; deposits of salts, paraffins and resins; destruction of unstable reservoirs are being studied; recommendations and technological solutions are being developed to prevent or minimize them in each case.
  • The geothermal energy use of produced water from spent wells with the dissolved gas and valuable components extraction is being studied.

In 2009, the department launched a highly specialized, but important and promising scientific direction for the oil and gas industry - gas hydrate technologies in the oil and gas industry (M. Zotsenko, V. Klymenko, L. Pedchenko, M. Pedchenko).

(Dr. М. Zotsneko and PhD M. Pedchenko present the laboratory of gas hydrate technologies achievements)
