Polytechnic Holds International Conference of Philologists, Teachers and Translators

On October 12-13, National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” held the 1st International Conference “Current Problems of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies”, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of our higher education institution. Specialists discussed the relevant problems of translation studies, and the tendencies of Germanic, Romance and Slavic philology development.

Polytechnic Holds International Conference of Philologists, Teachers and Translators

The problems, perspectives and innovation of philological education were discussed during the two-day 1st International Conference “Current Problems of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies” at National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”. The participants numbered up to one hundred, including the teachers and scientists of leading Ukrainian higher education institutions, Santa Fe College (the USA), University of São Paulo (Brazil), the representatives of the British Council and the Peace Corps (the USA) in Ukraine. Due to the lockdown limitations, the conference was held online on Zoom. It was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”.

“Greetings to the participants of the scientific conference on behalf of Rector of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko. Our university is eager to join holding large-scale international scientific and practical conferences, proving the idea of successful combination of humanitarian and technical specializations.

It’s an honor for us that experienced professionals from all over the world share their own experience and present new research fields at our conferences. National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” is a classical university that combines humanitarian and technical specializations. It is the introduction of humanitarian majors for training translators, foreign language teachers, PR and informational activity specialists, holding events on current problems of humanitarian fields, that allows to combine the achievements of engineering, science and humanities, join the process of humanizing, integrating and globalizing the education, training highly-qualified specialists for competitive job markets, and finding new research ideas. The participants were also greeted by Anna Ageicheva, PhD in Pedagogy, Dean of Faculty of Humanities of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”; Vilma Fuentes, Assistant Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Santa Fe College (Florida, USA); Zhanna Hrytsenko, Director of Technical Support Programs of the Peace Corps in Ukraine. The speakers mentioned the high level of organization of the conference and wished that the participants get inspiration, energy and optimism.

During the plenary meeting of the conference, the winners of the Student Essay Competition “My University” were awarded. It is important to note that the students of both philological and non-philological specializations took part in the competition. The main prize was a certificate for studying at the Foreign Language Center of our university.

The following presentations were delivered on the first day of the conference:

  • “Conceptual types of poetical iconicity” by Liliia Bezuhla, Doctor of Philology, Professor of German Philology and Translation Department, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University;
  • “Multiculturalism in modern British literature” by Tetiana Kushnirova, Doctor of Philology, Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”;
  • “DIE HESSE NIT VERGESSEN! – The dialect of Hessen” by Olena Karasenko, Doctor of Germanic Studies, Institute of the German Language, Frankfurt, Germany;
  • “Translation problems of the English oil and gas slang” by Yanina Bazalii, Head of Technical Translation Department, Burova Tekhnika NTP, Poltava;
  • “Teaching translation in technical higher education institutions: the use of information technologies for translation” by Nataliia Sharkova, PhD in Psychology, Associate Professor of Translation and Foreign Languages Department, National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine, Dnipro.

On the second day, the participants were working in the following sections:

  • Modern Tendencies of Germanic, Romance and Slavic Philology Development” (moderated by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Olena Dmytrenko);
  • Modern Translation Studies: Problems and Perspectives” (moderated by PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Oksana Vorobiova);
  • World Literature in the Context of Culture: the Problems of Literary Text Translation” (moderated by Doctor in Philology, Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Tetiana Kushnirova);
  • Innovative Approaches to Teaching Foreign Languages” (moderated by PhD in Pedagogy, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Oleksandr Kalnik).

PhD in Philology, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Anna Pavelieva delivered a presentation called “Translation of Clothe Names in M. V. Hohol’s Story “St. John’s Eve” into the English Language”, in which the structural and semantic peculiarities of idiomatic units in M. V. Hohol’s story and their translation into English were covered.

PhD in Pedagogy, Associate Professor of Germanic Philology and Translation Department of National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” Oleksandr Kalnik spoke about the practical tools of socionics, a science about communication in society.

The peculiarities of remote simultaneous interpretation and the functionality of RSI platforms were covered by Iryna Lobko, student of group 401HF of Faculty of Humanities, National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic”, who had recently won a training from a well-known British interpreter.

The digest of the students’ scientific club Philology led by Anna Pavelieva was presented by the third-year student of the specialization No. 035 Philology Sofiia Dmytriuk.

The articles based on the presentations will be published in the second edition of the 40th Issue of the Linguistic Studies international collection of scientific works listed as a special scientific publication of Ukraine (category B) in the specialization No. 035 Philology.
